PRP Injection

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injection is a regenerative medicine technique that has been used to manage various musculoskeletal conditions, including hip osteoarthritis. PRP is derived from a patient's own blood and contains a concentrated amount of platelets and growth factors that can potentially promote tissue healing and regeneration.

  • Blood Collection: The first step involves drawing a small amount of the patient's blood, usually from their arm, similar to a routine blood test.
  • Centrifugation: The collected blood is then placed in a centrifuge machine, which spins the blood at high speed to separate its components. This process isolates the platelets and plasma from the rest of the blood components.
  • Preparation of PRP: The resulting platelet-rich plasma is collected, and its concentration of platelets is significantly increased compared to regular blood.
  • Injection: The concentrated PRP is then injected directly into the affected hip joint, typically guided by imaging such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy to ensure accurate placement.

The growth factors in PRP are believed to help reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair and regeneration, which may lead to improved joint function and decreased pain in hip osteoarthritis. PRP injections are often considered for patients who have not responded well to other conservative treatments and want to avoid or delay more invasive procedures like joint replacement surgery.
