Interferential Therapy (IFT)

Interferential Therapy is a type of electrical stimulation therapy used to relieve pain and stimulate muscles. It involves the use of two or more electrical currents that intersect at the treatment site, creating an interference pattern. This allows deeper penetration of the electrical currents, promoting pain relief, muscle relaxation, and improved circulation. IFT is commonly used in physical therapy for various musculoskeletal conditions.

Do's for Interferential Therapy

  • Consult a Healthcare Professional: Before undergoing Interferential Therapy, consult with a qualified healthcare professional, such as a physical therapist or chiropractor, to ensure that the treatment is appropriate for your condition.
  • Follow Treatment Plan: Adhere to the treatment plan prescribed by your healthcare provider. Typically, Interferential Therapy involves multiple sessions over a specific duration for optimal results.
  • Communicate Discomfort: During the treatment, communicate any discomfort, pain, or unusual sensations to your therapist, so they can adjust the settings accordingly.
  • Relax During the Treatment: Interferential Therapy is generally painless. Relax during the treatment and try to remain still to allow the electrical impulses to penetrate the affected area effectively.

Don'ts for Interferential Therapy

  • Don't Use Near Certain Areas: Avoid applying Interferential Therapy near the eyes, throat, chest, or areas with impaired sensation or open wounds.
  • Avoid Overuse: While Interferential Therapy can be beneficial, excessive use may not yield better results and may even cause adverse effects. Stick to the prescribed treatment plan.
  • Don't Use Over Metal Implants: Avoid using Interferential Therapy over metal implants, as it can interfere with the electrical impulses and may cause discomfort.
  • Don't Use If Pregnant: Pregnant individuals should avoid Interferential Therapy, especially around the abdomen and pelvic region, as its effects on fetal development are not well understood.
